What is Knights Pride? What is PBIS?
The Phelps School District is proud to be a member of the PBIS network. PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is a framework of supports designed to maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students. It includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate behaviors in order to create a positive environment in our schools and in our community. In our district, we refer to our PBIS system as Knight's Pride.
Why do we need PBIS in Phelps?
PBIS is a successful framework used throughout our nation and we are proud to utilize various interventions and supports through this framework in our district as well. The ultimate goal of PBIS is to increase academic performance, help student social and emotional well-being, improve school safety, decrease problem behaviors, and establish a positive school culture. The expected outcomes from PBIS will not only affect our schools, but will flow into the homes of our students, as well as, our community.
At Phelps, our core expectations are:
- Respect
- Integrity
- Trust
- Commit
- Care
Goals of Knight's Pride (PBIS)
- To improve student academic achievement by first improving student behaviors.
- To create a uniform framework which all staff members will implement to support our students.
- To establish target behavioral problems through the use of data and provide additional support when necessary.
- To recognize positive behaviors and teach these expectations to others.
- To improve our students relationship with their school and community.
“Major” vs. “Minor” Discipline
“Major” and “Minor” behaviors have always been present in the school setting. What we are doing with Knights Pride is documenting these behaviors so that we can target specific behavior issues in our school.
Minor: Low-Level Infractions (Examples of Reportable Items)
- Disruptive behavior
- Keeping your body to yourself
- Defiance/Non-compliance
- Low-level Technology violations
Major: High-Level Infractions (Examples of Reportable Items)
- Receiving two minors in a week or three minors in a quarter
- Physical harm
- Horseplay/Unsafe behavior
- Repeated non-compliance
- Significant Inappropriate Language
Help us Help Your Child! We Need your Support!
You are the most important person in your child’s life. Parents are important teaching partners. Here are some ways you can have an impact in your child’s academic and social life:
- Talk with your child about his or her day.
- Ask your children if they have homework. Sit with them while they complete it.
- Keep communication between you and your child’s teacher open and active throughout the year.
- Focus on the positive things your child is doing.
- Be a positive role model.
Family-School-Community Partnerships Work!
Forty years of research shows that schools with effective partnerships with the family and community have:
- Students with higher grades and test scores, better attendance, higher graduation rates, and greater enrollment in postsecondary education
- Students with more positive attitudes and behavior
- Teachers with higher morale and higher ratings from parents
- Families who give the school more support
- Communities which regard the school more highly
